CDL grants: how to get WIOA funding for truck driving school

Updated October 2026

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) is the biggest source of free CDL training money in the country. It funds job training through local American Job Centers, and truck driving is an in-demand job in most areas.

Who may qualify

Adults and dislocated workers are the main groups. People who were laid off, are unemployed, earn a lower income or receive public assistance often get priority. Each local area sets its own rules and budgets, so ask about yours.

How to apply

  1. Find your American Job Center. Use the CareerOneStop job center finder (link below) and call or visit.
  2. Ask about WIOA training funds for a CDL. Say you want Class A or B training.
  3. Bring documents. Usually ID, proof of address, work history and income information, and, if laid off, your separation notice.
  4. Complete the assessment. A career advisor reviews your situation and goals.
  5. Choose an approved school. The training must be on your state's Eligible Training Provider List.
  6. Get approval before you enroll. Funding usually can't pay for training you started on your own.

Tips

Start early; approval can take weeks, and some areas run out of money late in the year. Be persistent and keep notes of who you spoke with. Ask whether they also help with costs like the DOT physical, permit fees or transportation.
