Using the GI Bill for CDL training

Updated October 2026

Veterans can often use VA education benefits, including the Post-9/11 GI Bill, to pay for an approved truck driving program.

Check the school first

The school's CDL program must be approved for VA benefits. Use the VA's GI Bill Comparison Tool (link below) to search for approved schools near you, and ask the school's VA certifying official how benefits are applied.

Veteran Readiness and Employment

If you have a service-connected disability, the VA's Veteran Readiness and Employment program may help with training and job placement for a career that fits your abilities.

Drove heavy vehicles in the military?

Many states offer a military skills test waiver that lets qualified service members and recent veterans with heavy vehicle experience skip the CDL skills test. You'll still take the knowledge tests. Ask your state licensing agency.
