Workforce Pell Grants for CDL training (new in 2026)
Updated October 2026
Starting July 1, 2026, federal Pell Grants can pay for certain short-term job training programs, not just college degrees. This new option is called Workforce Pell.
Which programs qualify
Eligible programs generally run 150 to 599 clock hours, or 8 to under 15 weeks. They must be approved by the state and the U.S. Department of Education and meet requirements for completion rates, job placement and earnings. Not every CDL program will qualify, especially at first.
What to do
- Fill out the FAFSA at studentaid.gov. Your eligibility and award depend on your financial situation.
- Ask community colleges and schools near you whether their CDL program is approved for Workforce Pell.
- Compare the total cost after aid with your other options.
Program rules are new and are being rolled out state by state. Confirm details with the school's financial aid office.
