How to choose a CDL school
Updated October 2026
The right school gets you licensed and ready for the job. Here's what to check.
Must-haves
Listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry for the training you need. Licensed by your state, if your state requires it. Clear total cost in writing, with a refund policy.
Ask these questions
How many hours will I spend behind the wheel? How many students share each truck? Will I train and test in a manual or automatic truck? (Testing in an automatic can put a restriction on your license.) What's your test pass rate? Do you help with job placement, and which carriers hire your graduates?
Red flags
Guaranteed jobs or guaranteed passing, pressure to sign today, fees that appear later, and schools that can't show their registry listing.
