ELDT requirements: what training you need before your CDL test
Updated October 2026
Since February 2022, new drivers must complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from a provider listed on the FMCSA's Training Provider Registry before taking certain CDL tests.
Who needs it
People getting a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time, upgrading from Class B to Class A, or adding the passenger (P), school bus (S) or hazmat (H) endorsement for the first time.
Theory and behind-the-wheel
ELDT has two parts. Theory can be completed online and must be passed with a score of at least 80%. Behind-the-wheel training happens on a range and on public roads. For hazmat, only theory is required, and it must be done before the knowledge test.
Save money
Doing theory online at your own pace usually costs far less than classroom time. Then you only pay a school for the behind-the-wheel part. Make sure every provider you use is listed on the Training Provider Registry.
